Produced by Sunskye Films in association with our studio, Golden Skies explores how modernity is reshaping the ancient tradition of eagle hunting in Western Mongolia. For centuries, the Kazakh people, a minority group in Mongolia, have trained golden eagles to hunt for survival in the harsh winters. Today, however, this skill is being repurposed—for tourism.

Since 2023, our team has spent over a year and a half documenting life in the remote far west of Mongolia, following two families as they navigate the tension between preserving their heritage and adapting to change. One focuses on a local English teacher and also part-time tour guide who is learning falconry not for survival, but to attract tourists and grow her business. Her cousin, the son of a legendary eagle hunter, pursues victory at Mongolia’s premier eagle hunting festival to honor his family’s legacy. Yet, he too finds himself drawn to the allure of being in the tourist spotlight. The film captures the transformation of this ancient tradition, revealing how survival has shifted—from hunting for food to adapting for economic sustainability in a modern world.
