In the Upper Gulf of California, Sea Shepherd is fighting to protect the vaquita, one of the rarest marine mammals on Earth. L.I. Productions joined the campaign at sea to document the mission, the crew, and the line between survival and disappearance.
about the project
01
overview
In the summer of 2025, L.I. Productions joined Sea Shepherd aboard M/V Seahorse to help document the Vaquita Defense campaign in the Upper Gulf of California. Our work covered daily life on the vessel, patrol activity, crew operations, and public facing video content designed to help audiences understand what was happening on the water and why it mattered.
The Mission
Sea Shepherd’s campaign focuses on protecting the vaquita, a critically endangered porpoise found only in the northern Gulf of California. The work in this region is urgent, technical, and often difficult for the public to see up close. Patrols, monitoring, ghost net recovery, and long hours at sea are all part of the effort, yet much of that reality remains invisible unless someone is there to document it clearly.
That is where our role became valuable. We were not there to dramatize the mission. We were there to make it visible.

What We Brought to the Campaign
L.I. Productions supported the campaign through field cinematography, photography, script development, and on camera communication. We documented the day to day rhythm of the mission while also helping shape content that could travel beyond the ship and reach viewers through Sea Shepherd’s public channels.
This part matters. Many conservation campaigns already have important work. What they often need is stronger translation. They need clear communication that helps people understand not just what is happening, but why they should care. Through visual storytelling and presenter led content, we helped turn field activity into something the public could follow, connect with, and remember.

Life on Board
A campaign like this is not covered from a distance. It is lived from within.
Working aboard M/V Seahorse meant following the pace of the crew, the movement of the water, the changing conditions of the day, and the operational limits of an active conservation mission. Some moments were visually dramatic. Others were quiet and repetitive. Both mattered. The credibility of the story came from staying close to the real work and letting that work speak for itself.
Because of that, the footage from this collaboration carries more than scenery. It carries process, discipline, atmosphere, and trust.

From Field Work to Public Understanding
One of the strongest outcomes of this collaboration was communication. The campaign involved specific terms, locations, and actions that can feel distant to a general audience. Through scripting, structure, and on camera explanation, we helped bridge that gap.
The result was content that did more than document operations. It gave viewers a clearer entry point into the mission. They could see the people behind the work, understand the pressure of the environment, and follow the purpose behind each patrol and each recovery effort. That kind of clarity matters, especially for organizations whose work depends on public awareness as much as field commitment.
A Continuing Collaboration
This collaboration is part of an ongoing relationship. After joining the campaign in 2025, L.I. Productions is continuing to support Sea Shepherd through future field documentation and media work.
We present this collaboration with respect for the organization’s communication standards and the seriousness of the mission. Sea Shepherd works with multiple contributors across its campaigns. Our role is specific. We bring strong field visuals, clear communication, and documentary discipline to help conservation work reach the public with accuracy and force.
why it matters
04
This collaboration reflects a larger direction inside L.I. Productions. Our studio is drawn to projects where film has a job beyond promotion. We work on stories tied to conservation, culture, and public understanding because these are the kinds of stories that deserve care, precision, and staying power. Sea Shepherd’s Vaquita Defense campaign sits naturally beside our documentary work on Mongolian eagle hunting heritage and wild camel conservation. Different subjects. Different environments. Same belief. Film can help people see what matters before it disappears.
